Jun 21 Road Ride – Sprint/Regroup

I’m unable to make it out this week, but Paul has graciously agreed to lead our second sprint/regroup session in Echo Bay.  The last one was all climbing, so this one’s for the sprinters–we’re doing all flat segments.  C-group riders are encouraged to come out, ride social, and watch the fireworks.  Remember to bring bug dope or risk being eaten alive when we stop to regroup.

Reminder: Rides are now starting at Echo Bay Central Public School at 6:30pm.  Map: Google.

A and B groups: This format is fun for riders of varying speeds, so we’re mixing the two groups this week.  Everyone will struggle and most will get dropped on one segment or more, but never for more than 10min before we regroup and ride social to the next segment.  Format reminder: Riders are expected to light it up on the segments, and some riders will absolutely get dropped.  At the end of the segment, everyone will stop or soft-pedal until the entire group is back together before riding at an easy social pace (no pushing it at all, everyone should feel comfortable) to the next segment.

If you’re normally a B-group rider, you will get dropped on the sprints.  Use them as an opportunity to push yourself or see how long you can hang on to the back of the lead group and you’ll get a solid interval workout.  It’s a great way to get faster.  Don’t worry about holding anyone up in a sprint/regroup format since you can bet the fast riders will need a break at the end of the segment!

The route is about 38km down Pioneer Rd to Watson Rd and right on Fords Rd.  Careful on the blind descent on Fords and make a right on Bar River Rd, left on Government Rd to go up and over Laird Hill.  Turn right on Pumpkin Point Rd and cross the highway with care.  Go right again on Lakeview Rd and follow it around the bend as it eventually becomes Lake George Rd.  Cross the highway again, trying not to get flattened, and continue to Lapish Rd.  Turn left and head up Fords Rd when the name changes.  Take a left on Watson Rd and follow the winding route to a right on Pioneer Rd and back down Church St to finish.  Map: Google.

In addition to the description below, segments are marked on the map pictured in this post.

Segment 1 (flat) – Bar River & Government Rd.
Start: 50kph speed limit sign soon after turning on to Bar River Rd
End: The last driveway before Laird Hill (#736 with a white mailbox).

Segment 2 (flat) – Lakeview Rd.
Start: 2nd telephone pole on Lakeview Rd.
End: End of the farm on Lake George Rd (before Hwy 17 crossing, it becomes treed instead of field).

Segment 3 (flat) – Watson & Pioneer Rd.
Start: Welcome to MacDonald, Meredith, & Aberdeen sign on Watson Rd (top of the climb)
End: Final telephone pole before the intersection with Hwy 638

C group: This will be a 23-28km social, no-drop ride from Echo Bay Central Public School starting with the hill up Hwy 638, down Cemetery Rd, and across Bar River Rd.  The group may detour south at Lapish Rd and go around the block to Lake George & Government Rd to add an extra 5km if desired.  Bar River Rd continues over to Hwy 17B which has great pavement and a wide shoulder back to the school.  Map: Google.

If you’re not sure which group you should ride with, we have a breakdown at the end of the formats page based on the pace or power that you normally ride at.
