The Deer Trail Triangle – Touring (Aug 1-3)

This is a three-day trip, starting and ending at the Serpent River Campground in Spragge, 167 km E of Sault Ste. Marie, beginning the morning of Tuesday August 1 and getting back to the campground on the afternoon of Thursday, August 3. Total trip length is 187 km, with daily distances being: 61km (August 1), 70km (August 2), and 56km (August 3).
Elevation gain is modest, at 1553m for the entire trip (average of ~520m per day), with the bulk of the climbing occurring on the first day.
Roads are generally safe for cycling, on either sparsely-travelled secondary roads, or along paved shoulders. Roughly 4km is along gravel roads or trails, and so a bicycle that is well-adapted to gravel would be preferred.
As an option for those who are interested, we could spend the night of July 31 at Serpent River Campground before heading out on the ride the following day.
This trip will be very straight-forward from the perspective of accommodations and meals, and there should be no need to bring any food other than a few snacks. Accommodations and food are summarized below:
August 1:
– Breakfast (optional) at Annette’s Diner (opens at 9:00 am) across the road from Serpent River Campground
– Lunch: various options available in Elliot Lake, 30km from start
– Supper: Laurentian Lodge, 61km from start
– Accommodations: Laurentian Lodge, 61km from start. As of July 5, there are plenty of rooms available. Please call 705-848-0423 to book a room, and reference Sault Cycling Club.
August 2:
– Breakfast: Laurentian Lodge
– Lunch: Eat along the way, likely in Little White River Provincial Park. Laurentian Lodge will make a box lunch if desired
– Supper: Red Top Inn, Iron Bridge (restaurant open 4:30 – 8:00 each evening) or potentially 3 Aces (restaurant open till 7:00 each evening)
– Accommodations: Red Top Inn, Iron Bridge, 70 km from start of the day. Please call 705-843-2100 to book a room and reference Sault Cycling Club.
August 3:
– Breakfast: Red Top Inn (restaurant opens 8:00 am)
– Lunch: Various options available at Blind River, 27km from the start of the day
– Supper: (optional) Annette’s Diner, 56km from the start of the day (open till 7:00 PM)
