Sault Ste. Marie: Trail Town

Sault Ste Marie is situated at the eastern end of Lake Superior.  We have a strong community of committed riders involved in trail development, cycling advocacy, youth riding and more! Our City is blessed with abundant, nearby, riding opportunities from urban multi-use trails, mountain biking to multi-day adventure routes. If you're looking for some inspiration on what you can do on a trip to the Sault or to just get into biking, we have some riding style details and suggestions for you!

Ride Like Peter

Peter likes to ride classic hand-built trails and backcountry adventure routes.  He also feels no trail is complete without some rocks!

DAY 1

Hiawatha (10-45+km)

Ride the trails at Hiawatha.  Trails are mix of classic hand-built and machine-built flow trails.

DAY 2

Lake Superior (15-100+km)

Cruise north to Pancake Bay Provincial Park to ride the hand built, backcountry trails.  Need more riding?  Discover more local routes on Trail Forks. Relax on the beach afterwards.

DAY 3

Bellevue Mtn (6km per lap)

Climb (200m+ elevation) or shuttle to the top, enjoy the view to Lake Superior and then descend for 1-2km on a series of advanced trails.

Ride Like Mel

Mel's a working mom of busy twins, who loves to ride her mountain bike, with a side of gravel every now and then. Her preference is longer rides at a medium pace (hence her nickname "Medium Pace Mel"), with some good techy fun thrown in for good measure. Her 8 year old girls also love to hit the trails every once in awhile.

DAY 1

Hiawatha Highlands

Crystal, with Farmer Lake loop, with an extension out to Crystal Lake for a swim. Bring some snacks to take a break on the rocks overlooking Crystal Lake, before hitting the fun flow back at the Crystal trails.

DAY 2

Stokely Creek

These trails offer great elevation and views. You can visit so many different lakes all in one day, including lunch at Norm's Cabin, and a longer rest up on King Mountain to take it all in.

DAY 3

Echo Bay / Laird

In Echo Bay, ride Government Road/Gordon Lake Road/Highway 638 is such a great gravel/road loop. It's easy to pack in a 100km day (or 40-60 depending on your start point) on the rolling hills and beautiful scenery. With endless combinations of country roads to make your ride as short or as long as you like!

Bonus Ride - With the Kids!

Parking at Connor road gets the most bang for your buck when you've got the kids along. You can hit the flowy fun of Berm Baby Berm, Sublime, and Hawaii 5-0, route back across the Waterfall trail (the bridge and rocks beside it are a perfect snack stop), and loop back on Flying Squirrel to the parking lot for a fun-filled 7km ride.

Ride Like Jack

Jack likes to find adventure right in his backyard…..

DAY 1

Red Rock (36km)

A nice gravel climb followed by a gravel descent into Red Rock. A good out and back, depending on the time of year and conditions you will find a nice swim or ice caves at the end of your ride.

DAY 2

Old Goulais Bay Road (56-90km)

A nice gravel climb out of town with a flat top section (keep a look out for a small detour off to the right with a good view) with a challenging descent down into Goulais.

DAY 3

Connor Road (65+km)

A challenging route that starts with a burly ride on Connor Road and gives way to a well established logging road that will take you down to the highway. Lots of lake views and stops along the way,
